Parliamentary Terms Explained

What is a 'Point of Order' or an 'Adjournment Debate'? Our glossary defines common parliamentary terms to help you better understand the proceedings.

Adjournment Debate
A short debate held at the end of a sitting, usually on a matter of public interest, initiated by a backbench MP.
Bill
A draft law presented to Parliament. A bill becomes an Act once it passes all readings and receives formal assent.
Hansard
The official, word-for-word report of everything said in Parliament.
Point of Order
An intervention during proceedings where an MP asks the Speaker to rule on a procedural question.
Private Member's Motion
A motion moved by an MP who is not a government minister, usually raising a matter for debate.
Quorum
The minimum number of MPs required to be present for Parliament to conduct official business.
Reading (First, Second, Third)
The three stages a bill passes through in Parliament before it can become law.
Speaker
The MP who presides over parliamentary sittings, ensures procedural rules are followed and maintains order.
Standing Orders
The rules and procedures that govern how Parliament conducts its business.
Supplementary Question
A follow-up question asked after a minister's initial reply during Question Time.
